The Westfield Mustangs wrapped up the regular season, and enjoyed Senior Night sendoff’s with a dominant performance, beating the Klein Bearkats 51-0, and winning their THIRD CONSECUTIVE DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP.
The Mustangs got off to a bit of a slow start in the first quarter, but kicked it in to high gear quickly, and took it to the struggling Bearkats. The scoring started with a field goal by SR Bryan Martinez to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead, and that’s all the defense would need the rest of the night, as they would pitch a shutout. Westfield’s offense would get it going on their next drive, moving the ball on the ground and in the air, finishing the drive on a beautiful 7 yard TD run by senior Latevious Downs. They would follow it up with a quick five play drive ending with a 4 yard TD run, by senior Rayquan Jones. The PAT attempt was no good, keeping the score 16-0. A drive down to the Bearkat 12 yard line would fall short with an interception in the endzone on Westfield’s last series of the first half, leaving Klein within striking distance. As the second half got underway, it was obvious that any hopes the Bearkats had of getting back in the game or pulling off the upset, were quickly dashed, when senior Steven McGrough returned the kickoff all the way down to the Klein 19 yard line. Senior Latevious Downs would reach the endzone again, this time on a spectacular 19 yard TD gallop. Quarterback Dillon Sterling-Cole would also connect for a 31 yard TD strike to senior WR Eric Pouncy on the next possession to cap a 9 play drive. Senior backup QB Peter Koulianos threw his first career TD pass to junior WR Josh Leblanc as the 4th quarter got underway, and the Mustang offense would cap their scoring for the night when another senior backup got an opportunity to shine, when running back Tyree Gamble carried every play down the field on a six play TD drive, punching it in on a 4 yard TD run, to make the score 44-0. The Mustangs stout, hard-hitting defense was exceptional all night, flying around, jarring helmets and footballs loose, and making Klein remember the night they played the Mustangs. Seniors Christian Gamboa and Tyrique Murray led the way, but on senior night, it was the youth movement that made it’s presence felt. Junior Ed Oliver was dominant as always, and Sophomore’s Jamichael Jackson, Danny Young, and Kerry Johnson all were tied or among the team leaders in tackles. The defense capped off their stellar performance when sophomore Bryce Cook stripped the ball loose from a Klein runner, and ran it back 65 yards for the final touchdown of the evening with only seconds left on the clock, making the final score 51-0. It was a great night to be a Mustang. Congratulations SENIORS, and all Westfield Mustang players and coaches on clinching the third, of their Back-to-Back-to-Back undefeated District Championships.
