Congratulations to Coach AJ Blum, who after 8 years coaching at Westfield, was recently blessed with an opportunity to join the University of Houston as their new Defensive Line coach.
Blum makes the 4th former Mustang coach, on a growing list, to have moved on to the College & NFL coaching ranks in the last 8 years. Joining Justin Outten (2016 – Atlanta Falcons), Corby Meekins (2015 – Univ of Houston, now Univ of Texas), and Chris Morgan (2009 – Oakland Raiders, now Atlanta Falcons). Morgan was also part of the Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl 48 championship coaching staff.
Blum had developed three All-Americans in five years at Westfield: Desmond Jackson (Texas), Hardreck Walker (Texas A&M) and Ed Oliver (Houston). Blum will team up again with former Westfield standout Ed Oliver, who as a freshman earned multiple All-American honors for the Cougars.
Coach Blum joined the Houston Cougars during the recent holiday break to begin his new position. Blum was a former standout at Ashland University (Ohio) where he was a three-year captain for the Eagles’ Football program. Blum began his coaching career following a two-year stint as an offensive and defensive lineman in the Arena Football League where he earned Second Team All-AF2 honors in 2000 as a member of the August Stallions, before joining the Orlando Predators. He coached at Klein Forest for six seasons before coming to Westfield in 2009, where he most recently served as the assistant head coach / co-defensive coordinator / defensive line coach at Westfield HS.
The faculty, staff, and players at Westfield will miss you greatly. You’re not far away, so we hope to see you still. We wish you and your family all the best.
